Our main Motto is "We Owe them a Debt, Let’s Ride for a Vet". This is a huge Motto, and it takes good people to make it work.
The Park Rapids American Legion Riders went under construction in the 8th month of 2012. Gary Schwartz who was the Post Commander at the time asked Richard Martin to take on the job of getting the Riders up and running.
At first it was unknown where to start, so we played it by ear and started putting the Constitution and By Laws together. Richard borrowed bits and pieces from other Chapters until we had a form of Constitution and By Laws.
We had to have the Commander and adjutant sign and date, then send it to the State of Minnesota and we were going. I had to have at least five Charter Members to get started, low and behold, we signed Myself (Richard Martin), (Marvin Vredenburg), (Fred Brown), (Eugene Anderson), and (Tom Parks) as our Charter Members.
After some months of planning Benefits and our first ride, it was discovered that our Constitution and By Laws were not up to National Standards. National sent me a template of both to go by and we started back at square one. I took a few days and long hours and put things together to National standards and had The New Commander of the Post sign them on the 7th month 8th day of 2013. I sent those to State and off to National and it has been a great pleasure to put this Chapter on the map.
We had our first Benefit in August 2, 2013 and our First Ride August 3, of 2013. Our First annual Benefit Ride was for our Northwest Veterans Transportation Program, which would help to get our Veterans to their medical appointments and home again. All funds we raise go to assist veterans, and their families.
So far we are up around thirty members and growing. We are working on some other rides that we hope will bring some of our younger Veterans together with us. At this time most of us are from the Vietnam Era, we really need to see our Desert War Veterans to join in and help with our effort.
Besides the benefits we put together and the Rides for 2014, we are planning a weekly fun ride. This is one that we can just ride, stop and have a late supper and ride back for home.
All of our Veterans Organizations need the help of our younger veterans, not just for the numbers, but for their vote in Congress that helps keep our Benefits coming to us. We also want to be of help to our community as a whole... Road guarding and escorting Veterans Funeral processions, or wherever they may need us.
